Chapter 4. Introduction
Basic skin care of atopic dermatitis encompasses recognition and avoidance of irritants and defined allergens, hydration, use of moisturizers as well as use of topical corticosteroids and the newer topical calcineurin inhibitors. To increase the chances of successful therapy, patients and their caregivers need to be educated about the fundamentals of the disease. In addition, impact of illness on patient and family quality of life needs to be considered. Treatment should be individualized and a written step-care care plan provided (HANDOUT: Action Plan), similar to the approach used in treating asthma.
